Winter Ride Saturdays Program
Gwyn & Jake are here to give you an overview of the Winter Ride Saturdays Program for 2021-22:
The Evolution of Winter Ride
The Winter Ride program has a long history at Mt. Baker, impacting countless community members, parents and Baker staff. We are deeply committed to continuing to invite and host youth at the mountain. The traditional timing of the Winter Ride program is during our peak time, impacting the Winter Ride experience. Starting this year, we are shifting Winter Ride lessons to March as part of “March Youth Month.” This shift will allow us to welcome more youth to the mountain environment and be most conducive to their wellbeing, safety, fun and learning.
Winter Ride Saturdays will serve youth in grades 6-12 for four weeks in March, with lessons required for all participants. For beginning and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, these lessons will be ski/snowboard skill based. For advanced skiers and riders, we are piloting a new “Mountain Skills” program that will focus on mountain knowledge, natural history and community science while exploring the ski area.
Example Mountain Skills Topics
Snow Science & Safety: An introduction to how snow forms, packs and stabilizes. Learn how weather and terrain affect our snowpack and what you can do to stay safe in the mountains.
Snow Algae/Community Science: Get involved in local climate research! Learn about microscopic snow algae living in our snowpack and how their presence is connected to our climate.
Opportunity in the Outdoors: Discover opportunities to turn your love of the outdoors into an occupation. Learn about various professional paths in the outdoor industry.
Nature and Wellbeing (PERMA): Find out how nature and life in the mountains ties into a healthy, holistic lifestyle.
