Mt. Baker Snow School combines hands-on science education with snowshoe powered exploration
for grades 6 - 12 at the Mt. Baker Ski Area.

AT MT. BAKER SNOW SCHOOL, WE:

  • Introduce students to the winter mountain environment
  • Engage students in hands-on, outdoor science learning
    that connects to classroom curricula
  • Encourage active/healthy lifestyles via winter recreation

ABOUT SNOW SCHOOL SESSIONS

NWAC instructor Shane does a compression test to explain avalanche triggers (natural vs. human).

DAY 1 : CLASSROOM SESSION

A Snow School instructor will visit your class at your school and provide an introduction to snow science and help prepare your students for their field session.

DAY 2 : FIELD SESSION

Students visit the Mt. Baker Ski Area and work together in small teams to carry out a field investigation surrounding the current snow and weather conditions.
Classroom visits are approximately 45 minutes & are scheduled the Monday or Tuesday before your field session. Sessions are available on a first come, first served basis. Approximately 45 students can be accommodated in each field session. Cost for the program is $10 per student.

Winter Wildlands Alliance Winter Wildlands Alliance is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving winter wildlands and a quality human-powered snowsports experience on public lands.

Northwest Avalanche Center NWAC is a collaborative effort between the US Forest Service Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center and the non-profit Friends of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center.
