BAKER BEACON RALLYSunday January 10 • FREE!
Mt. Baker Education Center, REI and a sluff-load of backcountry educators invites you to a Backcountry Education Day at Mt Baker. Learn about search technique including beacon, shovel and probe use. If you spend time skiing out of bounds, touring, snowshoeing, snowmobiling or any backcountry travel in the winter this event is for you. Beginners and Seasoned Veterans are welcome; three hours are devoted to basic skills education followed by an optional Beacon search race. Awards and freebies for class attendees and Beacon Rally racers.
LOCATION The upper parking lot at Mt Baker Ski Area. Parking space is limited; please carpool.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 11:00 am -1:30 pm - Check in Check in at the REI booth located near the upper parking lot. REI booth will be the hub of info for attendees.
11:00 am-2:00 pm - Education Stations
4 booths open as education stations. Participating in each station earns an attendee a ticket. Tickets will be drawn later for prizes. More tickets = more chances to win.
• Station 1a and 1b: Learn about Transceivers These stations are dedicated to basic beacon education. Attendees will learn how a Transceiver works and practice finding one buried beacon in a simple scenario.
• Station 2: Search Scenario 2 Station 2 is dedicated to more complex search situations. Attendees will work on finding two beacons in a more complex scenario than station one.
• Station 3: The Race Station 3 will have 2 beacons buried in terrain similar to what one would encounter in a live search situation. This scenario will be timed. In order to receive a ticket at station 3 participants will need to find both beacons within a given time frame.
2:00 pm -Ticket Freebies
Over $2,000 in prizes will be given away! BCA Tracker, Level 1 (AAI), Tents, Shovels, Probes, Packs and more will be given out to attendees with tickets. |
